Afterward, he was adopted at birth by Eric Nettles and his wife, Elsie.

Attending St Austell Grammar School as a youth, John went on to study history and philosophy at the University of Southampton in 1962. After graduation, he joined the Royal Court Theatre. 

Developing an interest in acting during the university, he has starred on over 33 credits throughout his career.
